Solar for Schools Education - Developmenteducation

Workshops

We deliver engaging and interactive workshop content that inspires hope and lasting change.

Linked to the curriculum

Our workshops link to, and often go beyond the National Curriculum. Covering science, maths, geography, design technology and PSHE/Life Skills topics. Those that work best for a particular Key Stage are marked accordingly in the menu below. We recommend combining an assembly with a workshop as this allows more time for a knowledge base to be established, see our Price List.

Delivered by experienced educators

Our incredible team of educators are engaging and highly-experienced. Workshops are between 45 minutes (minimum) to an hour, although we can do longer sessions at your request. We recommend combining an assembly with a workshop as this allows more time for a knowledge base to be established. There are some recommended combinations in our Price List.

Customised, if you already have solar with us

Our bespoke workshops are for schools that have or are soon to have solar panel installations managed by Solar for Schools. Schools in our community receive one free visit per year with the option of an assembly and workshop combination. You can buy additional assemblies and workshops throughout the year. If you have solar at your school, but not with Solar for Schools, we may be able to offer you a bespoke workshop based on the solar data provided by your installer, depending on its availability.

Workshops for any school

Your future is bright!

By interacting with our Solar Explorer Kit and industry job cards, your students will get to know about the many different roles open to them in the solar industry and other 'green skill' sectors.

Don't waste your energy!

We'll get your students understanding what a kWh hour is and how much it costs to run different electrical appliances. Our hands-on appliance cards will get them thinking about how important it is to save energy at home.

Where does our energy come from?

Introducing concepts like the power grid, energy mixes and the intermittency of renewable energy, we'll use a place-based approach to get your students invested in where their energy comes from to do the things they love to do.

How solar works

Using our Solar Explorer Kit, we'll get students learning hands-on how a solar power works, how it's an intermittent energy source, and what happens when there isn't any solar electricity being generated.

The basics of solar circuitry

Using our Solar Explorer Kit in collaboration with other fantastic tools from BrightSparks4Kids, we'll get your students investigating the difference between circuits in series and in parallel and understanding which works best for solar.

Workshops for schools going solar with us

Pre-installation presentation to leadership (B; KS2-5))

Students guidance in preparing a short presentation to school Leadership around the benefits of solar at your school. This is for schools that have already decided to get solar, but want to give their students some ownership of the project by involving them in the decision-making process. PSHE/life skills, ideal for Student Councils, leaders, and Eco Groups. Maximum 10 students.

Pre-installation solar panel design competition (KS2-5)

Students will learn how to use our free, web-based 'Paneliser' software to design the perfect solar panel system for your school. They will be asked to consider how to maximise the efficiency of their design. The student's designs can then be saved and submitted as a competition - which design is closest to the final design on completion. Science, Design Technology, internet access and IT devices required.

'Cut & Stick' solar panel design competition (EY, KS1, KS2)

Students will learn how to design the perfect solar panel system for your school. Sticking cut-out solar panels to an aerial map of your school rooftops, they will be asked to consider how to maximise the efficiency of their design. The student's designs can then be displayed in competition to be the closest to a 'solar expert' design. Science, Design Technology, scissors and glue sticks required.

Pre-installation drone analysis (KS2-5)

Students will be given the opportunity to fly a drone with one of our licensed educator's close supervision. They will explore their school's rooftops from the air, and learn how to analyse the viability of each rooftop for solar. Science, Design Technology. This activity is weather dependent. Maximum 10 students.

Installation 'walkabout' with drone (B; KS2-5)

Students can learn more about the solar installation as it happens, with potential for a talk by one of the installation team, explaining the process and their role in the project. Opportunity to fly a drone with one of our licensed educator's close supervision, documenting and photographing. PSHE/ life skills, green careers. This is weather dependent and ideal for Student Councils, Leaders, and Eco Groups. Maximum 10 students.

Celebration preparation for Solar Ambassadors (KS2-5)

Introducing you to our Solar Ambassador scheme. We will guide your chosen 'Solar Ambassadors' in delivering an assembly that celebrates your solar installation, and the fact that your school is now a member of an international community of solar generating pioneers! Students will be empowered to read and relay key data about your new solar PV system.

Become a Solar Ambassador!

Students will learn all about the 'ABCD' Solar Ambassador Pledge, teaching everyone at your school to make the most of becoming a solar generating power station!

Powered by the sun!

We'll walk your staff and students through your live energy data, bringing stats and numbers to life. Students will learn about base load, what a kWh is. They'll also learn about electricity consumption, self consumption and the power grid.

Your annual visit

Every year, we'll come in to visually inspect your system and alongside this, deliver a FREE education piece to suit your needs, typically an assembly followed by a workshop. We're always happy to get a small group of students involved with the inspection too.

Testimonials

The children learned about the environmental benefits of using solar power and many were enthused by the career options in the industry. They all loved learning facts about solar energy and especially liked getting hands on with mini solar powered electronics.

Hayley Whyatt

Year 6 Class Teacher, St Edmund's RC Primary School, Suffolk

The children were so engaged in the assembly and I have heard such positive things about the workshops. I am looking forward to working with secondary on a science project based around solar energy, after half term.

Anna Johnson

Assistant Head & SENCO in Primary, Olive Tree School, Spain

I really appreciated Danielle taking the time to show us the live data. It helped me consider how we could use this in context with the children for their maths when learning about how data can be used.
