Small school, big difference

Brightwalton CofE Primary School in Berkshire looks like many other small rural schools.

Just under 90 pupils, a close-knit community and a beautiful countryside setting. It is a school where every child is known and valued.

Look a little closer, however, and you'll see a school that has become a genuine sustainability champion.

In April this year, we installed a 36.6kWp system on the roofs at Brightwalton, comprising 86 solar panels.

But what makes Brightwalton stand out from other schools of this size, is that its solar journey wasn't driven by a government grant or corporate sponsorship.

Instead, the school took ownership of its energy future, self-funding its solar installation with support from the Church of England and a community energy fund established by teacher and renewable energy educator John Helsby.

The result is a powerful example of what can be achieved when a school community shares a vision. When visitors and parents arriving at Brightwalton they are greeted by an impressive array of rooftop panels. The system generates all of the school's electricity needs and more, providing both environmental and financial benefits while serving as a daily reminder of the school's commitment to a greener future.

"At Brightwalton we are passionate about the environment and aim to use the beautiful countryside surrounding our school to enhance our curriculum and help us value and look after the natural world. You only need to look at our school to know our commitment to the environment as you cannot miss the huge array of eight-one solar panels which provide ALL of the electricity to our school and more!"

Beyond the panels...

What stood out most during our recent visit wasn't the technology on the roof, but the the enthusiasm of the children.

Meeting with members of the School Council, it quickly became clear that sustainability is woven throughout school life.

The children absolutely loved sharing their work and were eager to explain the many ways they are helping make a difference both within school and beyond.

"They are true solar champions. The pupils spoke confidently about a huge range of environmental topics. And their excitement was infectious! It makes our jobs all the more worthwhile when we see in schools like Brightwalton that sustainability isn't treated as an add-on, but is very much part of the school's identity"

The school has embedded sustainability across its curriculum and wider activities, helping pupils understand not only how renewable energy works but why it matters. From growing vegetables to exploring local ecosystems and learning about environmental stewardship, pupils are regularly encouraged to connect their learning with real-world action.

Recent sustainability activities have included visits to local environmental projects, biodiversity learning experiences and practical gardening initiatives, helping children see sustainability in action way beyond the classroom.

Giving the children a platform

Most impressive of all, is is how Brightwalton has empowered pupils to become communicators and advocates.

The school has produced a range of pupil-led sustainability podcasts. During the process of making these, children research environmental topics, develop communication skills and share their learning with a wider audience.

The podcasts showcase not only the children's growing understanding of sustainability issues but also their enthusiasm for creating positive change. Listen to a podcast in which they interview one of the

The school's news pages also feature a dedicated podcast about their Solar for Schools installation, allowing pupils to reflect on the impact of the solar project and explain its importance in their own words.

Brightwalton Primary shows how a small school can have a remarkable impact when sustainability becomes a school-wide endeavour.

Supported by its community and driven by passionate staff and students, the school's solar installation has evolved beyond a source of clean energy. It's now a focal point for environmental learning, pupil leadership and climate action.

Brightwalton has created a culture where children don't just learn about sustainability, they actively champion it... an inspiring example for schools of every size.
