Ever wondered how much it costs to take a shower in the morning? You might want to find out some time, especially if you have an electric one. This is what Year 9 students at Shenley Brooke End School in Milton Keynes discovered this January when Solar for Schools visited for a workshop about their solar panels.
Two Year 9 classes were reminded about the fact that their school is part of a community of solar generating pioneers. They used their live data graphs to explore how much solar they are generating in comparison to the amount of electricity they are consuming at school on a daily basis.
Later, they had the opportunity to relate this to their personal energy consumption at home by considering the amount of kilo Watt hours that different household appliances typically use. Some of them were shocked to learn just how much energy heat-producing appliances, like electric showers, actually consume and when they calculated the annual cost of their daily electricity, some even made promises to reduce their consumption.
Solar for Schools' Richard Turner interviewed some of the students after their workshops. Watch what they had to say below.
After the workshops, a small group of students were chosen to accompany our Chief Operations Officer, Robert Goss, on a visual inspection of their 271kWp system that included a (safe!) trip onto the school roof to find and take photos of their four inverters.
Our Asset Management contract includes the Candle education package which means you get an onsite education visit once a year for free and we're always happy to involve selected students in our visual inspections so they can see 'behind the scenes' of their own solar power station!
