55 years ago, in 1970, the dawn of the modern environmental movement was sparked in North America with the birth of Earth Day when 20 million people took to the streets, parks and auditoriums across the country to demonstrate against the environmental impacts of 150 years of industrial development. At the time, it was the largest secular day of protest in the world.
Since then, EARTHDAY.ORG has been on a mission to diversify, educate and activate the environmental movement worldwide. It has mobilised over 1 billion worldwide for the future of the planet, and it works with more then 150,000 partners across the globe to drive positive action for our planet.
This year, everyone at Solar for Schools is particularly inspired by the Earth Day theme of 'Our Power, Our Planet!' which calls for a tripling of electricity generation via renewable energy sources by 2030. Having supported hundreds of schools across the UK, as well as a growing number in India and Colombia, to generate their own clean, renewable solar power, we are big advocates for the power of schools to take action for the health of this incredible planet.
#EarthActionDay, this April 22nd is all about taking action for the Earth, to educate, advocate, and mobilise. We invite you to use the Solar for Schools resources at your disposal to do exactly that. Check out some simple actions you can take below, today! Then, why not share your Earth Action on social media, and encourage others to get involved!
We're excited to be revisiting Henry Maynard Primary School in East London for Earth Day this year. They're about to get their second solar panel installation on their Infants & Nursery School rooftop. We love how their whole school community is involved with taking action for the planet, thanks largely to their incredibly committed Sustainability Lead, Anne-Marie Morgan. Watch what they got up to for last year's Earth Day below. We were there!
